African food calorie tracker by Nestamedia Studios Limited

Case study

From problem to product.

Challenge

Mainstream calorie apps barely recognise African dishes. Users were guessing macros for Jollof, Egusi, Injera, and Bobotie — or giving up on tracking altogether.

Approach

We built a curated 112-dish nutrition database across West, East, North, South, and Central Africa, then layered AI photo recognition and quick text logging so tracking works whether or not you have a camera handy.

Outcome

AfroCal shipped free on the App Store during beta with snap-to-log, offline meal history, and multilingual support across English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian.

“Finally an app that knows what Jollof rice is — I just snap my plate and it logs the calories.”
